Walter Samuel was the youngest son of Isaac and Mary Ann and, in 1911, he was attending Melton School. At the start of the war, Walter would have been too young to enlist, but later, when he turned eighteen, he was conscripted into the army. Booth’s Almanack from 1916 says that William was serving with the 10th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, which was their training battalion. Once his training had been completed, he would have been posted to join whichever battalion needed reinforcements.

In 1927, Walter married Gladys Sarah Wooderson in Woolwich. By 1939, Walter, Gladys and their two children were living on The Street, Melton. Walter was a carpenter and joiner and was also a special constable and fireman. He died in 1971.
